America’s Next Top Model Goes Sex Work Positive?

March 30, 2008 by Holly in television

This is pretty old subject matter, I know, but I hardly watch television due to the fact that the television is downstairs while my office (and the most occupied room in the house) is upstairs.

I was watching the latest cycle of America’s Next Top Model online (guilty pleasure, sorry!) and after the first minute and thirty seconds of the second episode, I stopped because the intro really hit a nerve with me. Is it just me or does the intro of the last season of America’s Next Top Model revolve around sex work?

In the beginning we of course see Tyra Banks posing for pictures and doing the “I used to be a model and that’s why I have this show” thing. Immediately afterwards, we see her in a glam/dominatrix outfit and walking out onto a runway, but with the lighting, I was immediately reminded of a strip club; not to mention, her entire attitude in the first 15 seconds exudes sex–Not modelesque, look at me kind of sexy, but look at me and give me a dollar bill sexy.

When the America’s Next Top Model hopefuls are pictured, we are given a series of somewhat disturbing images including a few in particular of Kimberly, Dominique and Marvita, who look like prostitutes waiting in a dark alleyway.

Isn’t it Tyra who is always telling these hopeful models to look high fashion and stay away from looking too “hoochie”?

Check it out for yourself and tell me if I’m crazy or not!

  • Even the music is a bit racy, don't you think? "Wanna be on top?" I mean, I know it's referring to "top model" but the way it is said sounds overly sexual in my opinion. Seems the show has gone downhill, or maybe losing it's audience, I don't know.
  • I watch the show regularly and I agree with you. Further, this is the first season that I find to be totally uninteresting. I can't seem to care about these girls. They are also getting nastier and nastier each season.
  • As a feminist, why are YOU sex work negative?

Have you ever seen the "America's Next Top Model" show or series where they had the models pose as victims of murders/homicide scenes? It made me want to vomit.

Oh noooesss, Avalon has slapped you with the "you're a worthless prude!" sticker! :P Quickly, go get lap dancing classes as soon as you can before you become ugly in the eyes of men and then you're not a feminist anymore!!
    *snort*
  • Maybe they want to make some twist on the program. Yeah, the girls looks nastier.
  • Hey...its a simple saying but true. Sex sells. Thats how it works in the world today. People will always take notice if you have good looking people, barely clothed, selling your product or show.
  • Yeah, I see what you are saying after I watched the clip. Especially the part where that one girl looked like she barely had anything covering her upper half.
  • At least it's not Rock of Love! What a "culture" we have. :\

Sex, or women's hypersexualized and objectified bodies, sell? Make the distinction between the two please. If you think "naked woman" instantly equals "sex", than I am sure the patriarchy has completely colonized your mind. Men use women's bodies to communicate with each other: to sell things; to wage war (hence wartime rape); to "award" each other (hot chick falls for ugly guy because he's "nice" or whatever). That is objectification. It is about power, not "sex."
  • I actually never thought of the intro that way. Of course if you think about modeling is all about showing off the sex appeal in order to sell the clothes, perfume, or whatever else they are trying to make people buy.
