Happy International Women’s Day!

March 8, 2008 · Filed Under Activism

International Women's Day It’s International Women’s Day!

“International Women’s Day has been observed since in the early 1900’s, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.”

For history on International Women’s Day, click here and for web casts, news, events and logos up for download, go to the official International Women’s Day website.

International Women’s Day, to me, means a great deal. The jobs of women across the world are far from done. While women have seen great success in the last 100 years or so, they have fought tooth and nail for every bit of that success and we are still seeing administrations who are threatening to revoke our rights not only here, but in other countries as well and the women of Afghanistan, in particular, are not seeing the changes that were promised to them, making Afghanistan one of the most dangerous places in the entire world to be female.

When speaking about International Women’s Day with a friend of mine, filmmaker Dany Nieves, who for the record is a man, had this to say:

“I am a man but I also understand the dynamics of society. Men do have the supposed power and use it for evil. After thousands of years of civilization and male dominance, great turmoil still exists. The basic question to be asked is “Is rule by men good for society?” It isn’t. We are born to a maternal world and it should be that way. Women can make good choices and keep society in check. Of course, men should also be more involved with issues they don’t want to deal with, like women’s issues.”

Women have a great deal to contribute to the world and in some countries, women are being applauded and urged to go forward with their work for equality and for women everywhere, even for the women who live in parts of the world where their voices cannot be heard and who are treated not as second-class citizens, but as third and fourth class. International Women’s Day is for all women, everywhere–It is one day where we must really reflect on our history and the history of women and applaud those who have been activists and who have fought in the present as well as in the past for the liberties and freedom that we have as well as raise awareness for those who do not.

Report IT Rally for Victim’s Rights

February 16, 2008 · Filed Under Activism, Violence Against Women

Report IT I’m a little late in posting this, which I apologize for. I’ve known about this for a little while now and until I received an email from Angela Shelton, I remembered that I needed to write about this.

1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.

Angela Shelton, Wendy Murphy, Angela Rose and PAVE have teamed up and created the Report IT campaign.

Sex crimes are the most under-reported crime in the US.

It is widely known that more than 80% of sex crimes go unreported and when they are reported, the victim is re-victimized by the police department as well as the juror or jury if their case makes it to court. In effort to shatter the silence that revolves around sexual assault and raise awareness about the amount of sex crime cases that go unreported, the Rally for Victim’s Rights will give survivors the voice and unity in their neighborhoods to demand justice for survivors of sex crimes.

Gather at your local court house with other survivors, friends of survivors and anyone else you can get to get themselves to their local court houses to say that survivors of sexual assault deserve a voice and justice! Report IT’s Rally for Victim’s Rights will take place in dozens of city court houses across the country on February 19 at noon.

For a list of cities already participating in the rally check after the jump. For a toolkit to hold a rally in your community, email info@pavingtheway.net and they will send you all the tools needed!

Everyone knows someone who has been sexually assaulted.

But February 19 is only the beginning!

While the Rally for Victim’s Rights starts on February 19, this campaign will turn into a nationwide state-to-state protest on April 29, which is Angela Shelton Day!

Blog for Choice 2008

January 5, 2008 · Filed Under Activism

Blog for Choice Day January 22 marks the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

On January 22, NARAL Pro-Choice America is holding the third annual Blog for Choice Day! In years past, this has had amazing success and this year, they are asking bloggers why they vote pro-choice.

This is a tremendously important day, especially for bloggers–Every day is a fight for women’s rights as the administration we are under is constantly trying to take a woman’s right to choose away. That, teamed up with anti-choice extremists, makes access to safe health care a never-ending battle. So please join NARAL Pro-Choice America and other pro-choice bloggers this year on January 22.

You can sign up here and even download a Blog for Choice graphic here to let everyone know that you are participating. Also, on January 22, your blog post will appear on the Blog for Choice page. Good deal.

As the anniversary approaches, NARAL Pro-Choice America also came out with RoeAt35.org, a website that is increasing the awareness of particularly the state of Wyoming and Bush’s latest effort to completely destroy access to health care for women.

President Bush has nominated Richard Honaker for a lifetime job as a federal judge. Honaker, a sworn enemy of women’s rights has spent his entire career fighting to deny women access to reproductive-health services and has publicly and actively opposes abortion and has tried three times to outright ban abortion in Wyoming.

So, in your activism efforts, stop by RoeAt35.org and fill out the form to be sent to the Senate and let them know that you do not support Richard Honaker for a position as a lifetime federal judge.
