13 Things I Did While Not Working
To continue my last post, I thought I would participate in this week’s Thursday Thirteen, even though it is almost Friday. So here you go, here are thirteen things that I did today while I should have been working, but wasn’t.
- Wrote down each and every thing I need to accomplish work-wise for the next week.
- Spent a truly incredible amount of time on Twitter.
- Did a lot of random blog hopping.
- Ate two packets of Ramen. In fact, I seriously never want to see another packet of Ramen again given the number of packs I have eaten in the past week.
- Watched Judge Maria Lopez–while eating Ramen.
- Thought long and hard about playing Virtua Fighter 5 (most addicting video game ever, especially since I kick some–No, I kick a lot of ass at it) after Judge Maria Lopez was over.
- Cursed the no coffee creamer having gods of the universe, making me switch from my usual coffee to water–with Pur Flavor Options.
- Came to the conclusion that Pandora is one of the Best. Websites. Ever.
- Checked my MySpace and marveled at the intimidating amount of people who have obviously lost their minds so early in life.
- Got groceries–And nearly made love to the Creme Brulee Coffee-Mate coffee creamer.
- Watched television with the boyfriend. (Hooray for quality time that we haven’t gotten to spend with each other much lately.)
- Had sex. (*gasp*)
- Came back to finish this post–You know, after the television-watching and sex-having.

I Need a Change of Scenery
Or at least I think that’s my problem. Really, I don’t know what it is, but something definitely must change around these parts or I’m going to be a poor (yes, I believe with this economy it may be possible to be more poor than I already am) and very, very sad woman. The first order of business, you know, as soon as I hit the lottery is to get a laptop so I am no longer chained to a desk in a room that keeps getting smaller as the hours pass right on by.
Here’s a little look into my day job. I have been sitting here for over four hours trying to get a website for a client done. Now, these past four hours are only a glimpse into the amount of time I have spent trying to get this website done; really, it has been three days. Three days! Three days and I have a background image done–I think I’ve made amazing progress, don’t you?
My feminist coverage as of late has been shotty, to put it in the most “socially acceptable” terms and I will work on putting more time into bringing you, the viewers, my various responses to several fucked up things going on in the world.
And since I am now incredibly too far behind on all of my work, I shall see you folks later. Send inspiration and motivation if you have any to spare.

Alltop: All Top Sites on the Web
Alltop is a pretty cool website that I often go to for new blogs to read and to keep up on all of the media and political news going on. It’s a really interesting site displaying all of the top sites on the web today under several different categories as well as the last five posts that website has up; you can hover over the title of the post and it comes up with a little snippet of the post so you can decide whether or not you would like to read through the whole post. You can also go to the website’s main page by clicking on the site name. There’s something there for everyone so you are never let down by the websites listed. It is also updated regularly with new sites, so there’s something new to be found fairly regularly.
Now how this directly relates to this website is simple. Menstrual Poetry has recently been added to Alltop under the life category, in which I am extremely delighted about.
Menstrual Poetry is now gaining more attention in the very large website world, so this is definitely a triumph. Now when you’re over there going through websites and catching up on the latest news, you can keep up with the posts here as well!

New Theme and Some Updates
Menstrual Poetry has a new layout!
Not a lot changed, as you can probably tell if you’re a frequent visitor; just some minor color changes, specifically with the grey and I have also kept a more fluid look with the fonts–I am obviously a huge fan of Arial at the moment. Other than that, the layout is pretty much the same as it was. However, what you may notice, again if you’re a frequent visitor, is that I cleaned up my ridiculously long sidebar problem I was having. All links that were in the sidebar can now be found here. I also changed how the comments look a bit, which hopefully spruces up that section, since I was sick of so much white everywhere.
Hope everyone likes the new layout and if you don’t, then you’re out of luck because I love it.

Menstrual Poetry Link Directory
Menstrual Poetry has been doing really well lately. Creating buzz and awareness for this website has been my daily work and the popularity the site is gaining is something that I am absolutely ecstatic about because that not only means that yay my website is actually getting significant hits daily, but also that more and more people are reading about feminism and human rights–That or they all really hate me and come here to tell me that.
Nevertheless, I have decided to expand Menstrual Poetry’s network a bit and have been working for countless hours on the newest installment–Seriously, it’s 10am and I haven’t shut my eyes and I believe I am going to start hallucinating soon.

Menstrual Poetry now has its very own link directory. I encourage everyone to go over and submit your websites; not only will it be some exposure for you and not make me feel as if I have just spent more hours than I probably should have creating something that is a bust, but link directories are also a fabulous (and way easy) way to gain a higher Google PageRank, so there is your incentive!
Note: The link directory does not exclude men bloggers, so don’t be fooled by the header description. However, it does exclude men bloggers and websites in general that contain sexist or misogynist content. This is a pro-female and pro-feminist website and the link directory is no different.

McCain on Choice: Federal Abortion Ban
Feministing has a great post up on John McCain and his long-standing anti-choice record. McCain, as most have already realized, will be the Republican candidate in the upcoming election; McCain is also the biggest threat to reproductive rights, if elected into office. For the next few weeks I will be taking his past pro-life record and looking at it a little more in depth.
While John McCain speaks about his pro-life record any chance he gets, according to NARAL, he “has never cosponsored or supported legislation that would prevent unintended pregnancy or reduce the need for abortion.” So while he believes that under no circumstances whatsoever should a woman be permitted to have a safe and legal abortion, he also does not support in adequate safe-sex education or any other educational or otherwise legislature that would protect women from getting pregnant in the first place.
Today we are going to take a look at the Federal Abortion Ban.
On April 18, 2007 the Supreme Court upheld the Federal Abortion Ban case (or Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003) saying that it “does not violate a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion.”
This ban paves the way for states to say to their women “This state has banned abortion, looks like you have to go through with 9 months of pregnancy and a lifetime with a child and we don’t give a damn if you can’t afford it, don’t want a child, or even if it is medically necessary and your own health is in danger because of this pregnancy, but your fetus has more rights than you do.”
This ban no longer leaves the decisions involving pregnancy to a woman and her doctor, but to politicians; most of which will never experience pregnancy. It bans safe and effective abortions and limits the time a woman has to seek an abortion even more–in this case, before viability. This ban does not make any exception for women whose health is at stake, violating the protection that was placed more than 30 years ago. Like most legislature trying to pull a fast one on the American people, the ban uses colorful and misleading wording and broad language subject to many different interpretations making it impossible for doctors who perform abortions to know what is and what isn’t prohibited when dealing with an abortion case.
Senator McCain’s presidential campaign released the following statement in response to the Federal Abortion Ban on April 18, 2007:
“Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a victory for those who cherish the sanctity of life and integrity of the judiciary. The ruling ensures that an unacceptable and unjustifiable practice will not be carried out on our innocent children. It also clearly speaks to the importance of nominating and confirming strict constructionist judges who interpret the law as it is written, and do not usurp the authority of Congress and state legislatures. As we move forward, it is critically important that our party continues to stand on the side of life.”
With such a staunch position on giving fetuses and embryos more rights than already living and breathing human, do we really want McCain, the Republican candidate in the upcoming election who opposes abortion and does not support women (even more so than Bush) to claim the presidency and move our rights backward over 30 years? I know I don’t.

Warning: It’s Only Sexual Assault if He Succeeds in Getting a Blowjob
Jackson County Commissioner Mike Brown was acquitted in a court in Michigan after being found not guilty of committing fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, a misdemeanor, and attempted third-degree criminal sexual conduct, which is a felony.
Mike Brown, a 61 year old man had admitted to exposing himself to a 24 year old woman whom he was giving a ride home to, as well as trying to push her head into his lap in hopes of her performing oral sex. However, he was found not guilty because he had not exerted the force needed to actually succeed in receiving said oral sex. Michigan’s law states that a person will be found guilty of criminal sexual conduct if “force or coercion is used to accomplish the sexual conduct.”
Are you kidding me? So a person can try to force someone into a sexual act without consent, however, if they aren’t successful then it doesn’t really count? That’s pretty much on the same lines of saying “Well sure, I ripped all of her clothes off and inserted myself into her, but I didn’t cum so I don’t think I should be found guilty of rape.”
Juror Rudy Nowles stated that both the woman as well as Brown had “both made big mistakes” and “[were] both stupid”, however, I also cannot see his side of those statements. As far as I’m concerned, a woman needed a ride home and had accepted a ride from a Jackson County Commissioner, who you would think would be a safe and logical decision and also taking into consideration that she had known this man, therefore making her not so stupid. The juror is correct, however, in saying that Brown was stupid, for lack of much more harsh and demeaning words, but not the woman. This juror is basically taking the blame from Brown and once again, as we have seen in many cases, pushing the blame for Brown’s acts on the woman making it her fault that she was not only sexually assaulted, but did not even receive the justice that she was deserved in this case.
I’m willing to bet that we’ll most likely see more of Mike Brown in the future. This woman had the support system and the ability to speak up about what had happened to her and Brown, at 61 years old, has probably done this to more women in the past. Perhaps with this woman’s bravery will provoke other women who have been assaulted by Brown to speak up and come forward.
