I Think GenderAnalyzer was Created by a Man (100%)

November 19, 2008 by Holly in Menstrual Poetry

While reading one of my favorite blogs, Womanist Musings, I came across a post of hers about this website, GenderAnalyzer, which tries to guess, basically, if your site is written by a man or a woman. Obviously, I was very interested in finding out if my site was written by a male or a female and apparently I am doing something right or very wrong because they got it right.

GenderAnalyzer Now before you start saying that of course GenderAnalyzer said Menstrual Poetry was written by a woman; just look at the name! You would also conclude that Womanist Musings would have come up as written by a woman, given the fact that the word ‘woman’ is in the title, but no, it concluded that a man is behind that blog.

Perhaps it’s the amount of times I have used words such as vagina or abortion, although most of the people who have such a huge problem with that are oddly middle to eldery aged men, or maybe I really do just blog like a girl…

  • nice post, i wan to try this gender analyzer my self.
  • My site came back as probably written by a man but fairly gender neutral. The site is wrong about the gender.
  • I think I ended up throwing that ridiculous little test more traffic that I intended. It seems that whenever I do any of these gender tests online the answers always come back male. I really do wish we could see behind some of them. What traits have they assigned to male and what traits have they assigned to female. I think that would be far more fascinating than just seeing the failed results of their gender essentialist logic.
  • It also incorrectly thinks my blog was written by a male (79%), and like you this isn't an unusual result. I've done these stupid things several times over the years and the results are always the same.
  • Wow that's odd, how have they managed to do that and why would people use it?
  • I'm a guy, and I like looking through your site, but MENSTRUAL POETRY, I KNEW before even clicking this link that it was written by a Woman. I want to try this thing
  • Hmmmm....GenderAnalyzer is 77% sure my site is written by a man. I'm super curious about its engine and how it makes its determination.

    Thanks for posting about this!!
  • According to Gender Analyzer and its sister sites, I am male, ISTP and write like William Shakespeare/ Mark Twain/ Oscar Wilde. No, no and no.
  • Nice post. My webpage came through as gender neutral. I wonder the sort of words that are considered male or female. Or is it the type of language constructs that are considered. This is interesting, particularly as in other languages words are distinguished as masculine and feminine in a more formal way - e.g french and german - I wonder if this would tie up wi the English version or would have any bearing.
  • Happy Thanksgiving Holly! BTW - I tried this gender analyzer thing. Says my blog was written by a male..but they were only 65% sure. Must have been that feminism post you put up months ago! LOL
  • Wow, this is really interesting stuff. Tried mine and few sites of my friends (I know there Gender LOL) got it 50% accuracy rate.

  • I think a "woman" related blog has got very little to do with the sex of the writer... Even concerned men can write up pages after pages of articles containing words like abortion and vagina... as long as it has got some contribution! Interesting post!
  • ya you are right and i agree. I think that would be far more fascinating than just seeing the failed results of their gender essentialist logic.
  • Ha, well my site is all man (well 73% man anyway) ;)
  • i wonder on what basis it differ between man and woman about witting a web page :)
  • My site is certainly neutral!
  • My site didn't have a chance of being neutral.
