The Lives of the People We “Saved”

Bush withdraw cartoon

So how, exactly, are those in Iraq living their lives now–after Bush’s invasion of Iraq in 2003?

I’ve delved into this subject a bit already with how Afghanistan has been transformed by war and specifically how Afghani women are being treated and living their lives now. Now it’s time to take a little look at Iraq and specifically, Iraqi women.

Over 1.2 million people fled Iraq after the Bush invasion. The result of the Iraq war has caused these people to flee from their country and attempt to build new lives for themselves in Syria. While building lives away from the chaos in Iraq, Iraqi women and teenagers, some as young as 13 years old, have been forced into prostitution.

The number of women involved in this prostitution ring, which George Bush is not only aware of, but is tied to because of his invasion and putting the Iraqi people in more danger than they were even before the war, involves as many as 50,000 women and girls. The reason for so many women being forced into this line of work is because if they are lucky, on a given night at a nightclub in hopes of work, they will make $60, which adds up to a week worth of pay in a standard factory. While these people are starving, there is no other work for women there that would make the amount of money to support their families.

Bush’s invasion of Iraq, a country that posed no threat to the United States, is illegal under US and national law. Bush has also been convicted of war crimes which had made headlines not so long ago. With these two instances in mind, driving women and children into prostitution violates human rights agreements, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children.

So how is Iraq doing after the Bush administration’s attack? I’d say pretty horrible, how about you?

I’m not saying that there isn’t good cause to be angry at what is happening in Afghanistan, but until I learn more, how do I know what the lives of Afghani women would be like even if there were no war? We American women may have many grievances, but we have MANY MANY freedoms that women in other countries do not have. And, while it is horrific what these people have suffered, prostitution under these particular circumstances is still a choice. It is one of the highest paying jobs in America, too, but you can’t blame President Bush because women make that choice. Not that I condone or excuse the system that brings about that choice, but that is the subject for another post, I think.

Afghani women had pretty shitty lives to begin with. Nevertheless, this has made the situation much worse and I never advocated the war from day one. What angers me is that the war was done for material gain, not for moral reasons as it was masqueraded to fight for.

Bush is a liar and has tricked the American army into fighting a cause which is entirely for economic means and nothing to do with freedom, terrorism or the good of mankind.

  5. I agree with your point that we made things worse. Though I kind of wish you didn’t call it the “Bush invasion.” While Bush may have been a factor in spearheading this and moving it forward, it’s the country’s responsibility that this happened, not just one man. Though I can’t stand him, it’s not fair to put all blame on him.

Bush is a big fat liar. He never should have invaded Iraq in the first place. The war is just wrong.

I saw the photo of the 11 year old girl with her new husband. I pity those girls. What’s happening is just horrible.

An invasion of Iraq had been part of the geopolitical strategy of the United States for many years. It was just one element of a strategy designed to gain for the US domination of the world’s economic resources.

He only invaded because he had nothing better to do with his time and then there was the whole thing about his dad and sadam.

This is quite a touchy topic. I do not condone wars nor do majority of people I believe. I just hope that everyone can learn from the history and pave a better future.

I know I am a bit late to this post, but I definitely agree with Sara on this one.

And has anyone else noticed that everyone has a double-post? Maybe it’s just me…or a comments section error. Anyway, thanks for the post.

    Cheers.
