A Lovely Example of Anti-Abortion Extremism

anti-choice extremist While reading some kick ass feminist news over at Feministing, a picture on their Flickr widget caught my attention.

The picture to your left is yet another lovely example of anti-abortion extremism. This picture was taken at the 2004 March for Women’s Lives in Washington, DC. By holding a sign that says something so incredibly hateful and ignorant you are doing nothing but putting more hate back into the world around you. By holding a sign that says “You killed the next president” first of all is grouping all women who walk in the March for Women’s Lives as women who have had an abortion, which is not true at all; it also goes to show you that anti-abortion extremists do not care what they have to say to you to make you think like they do.

When you look at this technically, a woman who has had an abortion less than 35 years ago certainly did not kill the next president, which was mentioned in the comments for this picture on Flickr. In all likelihood women probably just aborted fetuses that would have grown up to be the kind of people that pro-lifers hate anyway–You know, liberal, homosexual, atheists; the list can go on. Logically speaking in response to this sign, a woman may have also killed the next Hitler or the next Charles Manson; but no, pro-lifers can’t see it from that standpoint, they see it as “You killed an innocent baaaaaaaaaabyyyyyy!” and then whatever happens after that “innocent baby” is born is the mother’s problem…And welfare’s problem, because we can’t forget about welfare, another thing that pro-life people complain about.

Another point that must be brought up is that anti-abortion extremists must stop comparing abortion to the Holocaust. It is demeaning and frankly holds no weight at all in a debate. Are women having unwanted children and then sending them off to torture chambers and gassing them to death by the hundreds? Uhh, no. Aborting a cluster of cells is by no means comparable to millions of men, women and children being starved, overworked, tortured and gassed to death, sorry.

I can’t stand when these so-called pro-lifers trivialize the Holocaust by comparing it to abortion. I especially can’t stand people who call themselves “feminists” and then march around with signs like these, rubbing the guilt even further into women who have had abortions. That’s not an easy choice for a woman, and it’s extremely selfish and naive to act as though they “took the easy way out” and should be labeled murderers.

You also make a good point about the next Hitler or Charles Manson. If they’re going to use that old and pathetic argument of “but what if so-and-so had been aborted?” then they must also recognize that along with our next president and next child prodigy and whoever will cure cancer, a bunch of terrorists and mass murderers were “killed” as well.

these people are scary – every individual women has to make their own decision, it’s a tremendously scary thing, for anyone. we should focus on supporting them, not putting fear and more guilt into them. i work with so many women (singles) and if there were just more education and supportive services out there, I think we’d be in a better shape all around.

Its good that every women takes her own desition, its enormously terrifying one. Everyone should support them and also encourage them in their desition and also we have to be very careful in every way.

Did they ever think that maybe they killed the next president when she bled to death from a back alley abortion, died in childbirth, or was trapped to a life she didn’t want because of an unplanned pregnancy? Why is it the mothers, the women, are so less than human to these people?

  5. May i just say that i really like your blog and the way that you tackle weighty issues in an incisive and straightforward manner.

In this post you have effectively dealt with all the self-righteous stuff that prolifers spout, though i would not call them that; because i believe that we are all prolifers. The so called ‘prolifers’ are merely anti-abortionists.

Even legally and biologically speaking, a foetus is not a viable being until six months of gestation and later, and so is not a ‘person’ in any sense of the word so those who equate abortion with murder are just offering up a specious and untenable argument, and aggravating the issue with emotional and melodramatic statements

“Abortion debate” is a misnomer; we are not debating abortion, we are debating rights. Rights, not morals; rights, not ethics.

Abortion is a very personal decision.

  14. malbom says:

Abortion is not a personal decision, it is a civil rights issue.

She has her own body. She has her own DNA. She has her own inalienable rights.
Living in her mother’s womb does not diminish her rights.

  15. Heather says:

Well women who chose abortion are acting as murderers. A baby is unique from the day they are conceived. And for you to not care about an unborn baby is ridiculous because if your mother had aborted you, we wouldn't even be having this argument. Adoption is a viable option for women who don't want their babies so killing a baby isn't going to solve the whole situation because now the woman will have to remember the mistake she made.

  16. Heather says:

Well it may just be a fetus to you, but as soon as the fetus is conceived, it is a unique being just like me and you and at conception their DNA is made and once that DNA is made it will never be done again.
