Maine Becomes 5th State to Legalize Same Sex Marriage

Sorted under GLBTQ on May 6, 2009

The Maine Senate passed to legalize same sex marriage with a vote of 21-13 and Maine’s governor signed that passed bill today, making Maine the fifth state to recognize, celebrate, and show a little equality to their same sex couple citizens! This is a great step for the Democratic governor, John Baldacci, who had previously stated that he opposes gay marriage but supports civil unions, which he says provides many benefits of marriage.

Republican Senator Debra Plowman argued that the passing of this bill was not well-founded and had been passed “at the expense of the people of faith.” As we know by now, this is pretty much the fallback complaint in each state that we have seen a bill like this pass in from “people of faith” and their obsession with controlling pretty much everything and doing all they can to try to push their personal belief system onto anyone within range, including our government.

To keep the fanatic “you’re trying to force the evil gays to marriage in our beloved, holy churches” commotion at bay, Senate Majority Leader Philip Bartlett II said the bill does not compel religious institutions to recognize gay marriage. He voiced that Maine respects religious liberties and that legalizing and recognizing same sex equality is long overdue.

I could not agree more.

  • Me too, it's high time the states started to fall in line and recognize human rights like the right to marry the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. One at a time, slowly but surely the tides are bound to change.
