Medical Accuracy is So Last Year

January 12, 2008

Uninformed religious fanatics are a dime a dozen lately, especially in politics, as we can easily see from the lineup of Republican presidential hopefuls. However, Indiana is also doubting the intelligence of women seeking abortions, as was demonstrated Thursday.

Life begins at conception, and a fetus could feel pain during an abortion.

Oh wow, that’s a factual statement if I ever heard one!

In a legislation by Sen. Patricia L. Miller, (R-Indianapolis) Senate Bill 146, states that doctors would have to deliver the above statement to any woman seeking an abortion. This legislation was introduced for the second time since it died in the Senate last year, and was debated again on Thursday.

Miller said the bill is necessary to make sure women considering an abortion have all the facts they need to make an informed decision.

I agree with Miller–A woman considering an abortion should have all the facts and she should make an informed decision. However, a woman is entitled to facts based on medical accuracy, not religious propaganda. And the woman, by seeking an abortion has already made an informed (and very difficult) decision before even stepping into a health care facility.

Sue Swayze, with Indiana Right to Life, said she hopes the legislation passes this year.

“We think that it’s important to provide this information, especially in writing,” Swayze said. “An abortion is an emotional issue, and we sometimes may not always remember everything we hear.”

Yes, it is best to give “emotional women” something to read, especially when it contains myths of what religious extremists believe–and nothing else. What about the atheist women seeking abortions? Well, according to the belief system of religious and pro-life extremists, they’re doomed and in need of counseling and prayer anyway. Sigh.

  1. I bet there are people living in Indiana that are outraged to see this bill coming from their representatives. I would also bet that they don’t do a single thing about it besides complain.

This is why the crazies get away with stupid shit like this. We’re too lazy to do anything about it.

  2. Hi lover. Do you realize that you manage to captivate me anytime I read your words? Your writing draws me in and keep me interested, and that’s so fucking hard to find anymore. I appreciate what you have to say, because you say it so well.
Anyway, in response to what you’ve written so articulately here, I have to say I agree with every word of it; but that’s not exactly out of the ordinary, we are both liberal atheists. That first quotation you have in your blog–gah–I abhor when pushy pro-life advocates try backing that statement. I always have the same response to it, “Even if your opinion is that life begins at conception, age will still be measured from the day of a child’s physical birth. We measure age beginning with the day you were born, not conceived.” Usually they want to continue arguing anyway, but sometimes I’ll run across a person who actually tastes my food for thought. Most pro-lifers are of the sex whose body the issue doesn’t concern. It’s pretty easy to stand against something when it will never personally affect you. I could go on and on about this, but then I’ll end up getting pissed off as I’m discussing the issue, and I don’t wanna be in a bad mood. hehe

But I’ve gotta email you back because you just responded. So I will end this little rambling comment.

  3. Very good article!!!

  4. the great debate by dream theater- a great song about abortion!

  5. Another interesting article.
There is one arguable affirmation though.

“I agree with Miller–A woman considering an abortion should have all the facts and she should make an informed decision. However, a woman is entitled to facts based on medical accuracy, not religious propaganda. And the woman, by seeking an abortion has already made an informed (and very difficult) decision before even stepping into a health care facility.”

I’m an atheist, therefor I’m not in favor of the religion or anything, but I think that in this society you can not neglect the religious factor. It’s pretty hard to do such a decision based only on scientific facts because this not only about a medical procedure, but also a debate about the ethical grounds of it.

  6. a fetus could feel pain during an abortion.

Well, sure, a fetus COULD feel pain, kind of like how the plants we eat COULD feel pain. Like, there might be a .000000002% chance that’s true, but if you want to prevent pain in the world you’d probably be better served to not buy clothing made in sweat shops, buy everything fair trade or secondhand, donate money to homeless shelters and bring a canvas bag when you go grocery shopping.

I wonder if, under this law, after doctors spout that forced “Life begins at conception” line, could they then say, “but I’m only required to tell you this because of the law, and there’s actually no peer-reviewed evidence to back that up, and here’s some studies to prove it.” I mean, they’re forced to spout that crap, but they can say whatever they want after that to totally negate it, right? (Not that I’m saying the law isn’t horrible, just that I would love to see doctors make it absolutely toothless….)

  7. How can you compare the life of a human to a plant? Aren’t you lucky that you weren’t one of those fetus’ , so that you could be alive to spout your crap!
