As More and More People Lose their Health Coverage, Senator Vitter Moves to Strip Title X Funding

This is a few days late and yes, in fact I am continuously playing catch up when it comes to blogging about all of the news going on lately.

Senator David Vitter (R-LA) introduced an amendment to the Senate that would drastically cut family planning funding under Title X, which currently provides federal funding for family planning services and preventive health care.

Over the past 30 years, Title X family planning clinics and their advocates have ensured millions of low income, uninsured women and men access to health services. In 2006 alone, approximately 5 million people received health care services because of Title X funding alone.

It goes without saying that Title X funding is imperative to continue providing people with health care services they need; services that could potentially save their lives. As we have noticed time and time again, the anti-choice groups and people across the country will go as far as they feel they need to to eliminate choice and the ability for people to make their own informed decisions about their bodies and lives and Sen. Vitter is another one of those people. By introducing an amendment to cut Title X funding is an insult to each and every single person who has ever sought the care and services from the clinics that receive this funding as well as those who will step into these clinics in the future.

On March 3, Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood wrote an email about Sen. Vitter’s amendment, saying:

“This is the worst possible time for these outrageous attacks. More and more people are losing their jobs and their health insurance — and that means that safety-net providers like Planned Parenthood affiliate health centers are more important than ever. It’s unconscionable to try to strip our funding at time when so many people are relying on us — but that’s exactly what Sen. Vitter and his allies are trying to do.”
