Sex Criminal Fashions

Sorted under sexual assault on April 13, 2008

I hate the mentality that rape is a funny word. Rape is not a funny word, action or mindset and it should most definitely not be used in a comedy bit; the same goes for the word pedophile. These words have absolutely no place in comedy, yet lately it seems to be popping up everywhere and the people who are seeing these words being used in comedy are going right along with it, which infuriates me.

Jon Lajoie This particular video, entitled ‘Pedophile Beards,’ by Jon Lajoie is actually a followup video for a previous one entitled ‘Rapist Glasses.’ With over 214,000 views, 1,249 text comments and 11 video responses, the majority of Jon’s viewers are laughing right along with him, saying that it is the funniest thing that they have seen in a while and that they know many people who fit into the stereotypes that he is pointing out–those being not only rapists and pedophiles, but he has also added public masturbators and serial killers to the mix. And the point to the video? Using well known visual stereotypes in a “comedic,” and I use that word very lightly, video about sex criminal fashions.

Sure, while it is “meant to be funny,” Tshirts with the words ’serial rapist’ on them, such as the shirt (and those like them) posted over at SAFER were also just “meant as a joke” and are now in the process of being removed from Cafepress.

I, for one, am not laughing.

    You people are shockingly ignorant.
There's absolutely nothing inherently "funny" about an inanimate object, for instance.. however you can still make jokes about them.
Jokes about actions like rape and murder may be in 'bad taste', but it's not like he is actually raping and murdering anyone, or even condoning doing so.
The whole point is simply that the idea that someone would actually WANT to look like a murderer, or rapist, is so ludicrous, its funny.
    Get over it.

What about sexual roleplaying called rape fantasy - is it bad taste too?
I agree with you about real rape, murders and other criminal actions - this is really shocking!
  • Rape is not a funny word, but rape fantasy sounds good for some people..

you don't get it do you? this video has got nothing to do with the act of rape. its about pushing the envelope with the bad boy look so that it becomes counter productive and ends up " scaring the shit out of people". And this video is not a representative of the state of comedy in general because Jon Lajoie belongs to a class of his own. you need to have a level of tolerance and sense of humor to enjoy his comedy which are primarily self ridicule and has nothing to do with sexual violence. 5,092,681 views.
don't feel threatened, this video will only avert people from these stereotypes.

Maybe u just cant understand the funny thing in it...I mean ofc the fact, that people getting raped anytime, everywhere in the world, is not a funny thing...but u can all see black like this and can do jokes wich are not funny, and lough abot things like b4 100 years, but that wont make the world better! I would say this is a way for remembering, that Human are sick, and that such things happen, because it wont stop, but if u dont talk about in any case, people maybe forget about the bad in the world in life thair lives more in the way about not thinking of tomorrow.
this is my oppinion, and excuse my bad english..its been a long time til i had some english lessons^^

That video reminds me of my former roommate, John, who grew a pedophile beard because his girlfriend supposedly found it sexy. I couldn't comprehend his girlfriend's attraction to it until I discovered she is bi-sexual. Anyway, are all feminists this uptight? The funniest jokes are about taboo subjects. Political correctness is not funny!
  • Nice post. Have bookmarked your blog and will be sure to come back soon!

While I respect your views, I think it's hypocritical you are essentially giving him free advertising on your site. A description of the video would suffice to demonstrate your point.

Hi guys first of all i agree. Killing, raping and other "activities' are not funny, but on the other hand when people laugh on the topic it means thei are reconciled with the issue, In other words the people who sees this activities funny understand it is bad, but on the other hand they understand this is something which happens. These people are also more open minded and dont hasitate to speak about the topic.

Furthermore, he is not making fun of rape... He is making fun of people who prance around wearing big beards and thick glasses, or those who drive creepy vans... Its innocent really.... that is if you don't take things literally and lighten up a tad. Not all men are evil you know.

Good comedy gets people's attention by going to extremes. How many "I hate my wife" jokes can society take after all? Before jumping to conclusions about people by #1: assuming they're aiming to offend people and #2: assuming them to be "sick" or "dumb", perhaps you should read deeper into the concept of sarcasm. It's very easy to take a joke literally; it takes a brain and a half to understand its actual roots. Jon does not degrade people; he pokes fun at society's absurd nature. If anything is degrading, I'd look more towards top 40 radio and television. I'm constantly amazed at how people draw the line on "funny". What exactly would you all define "funny" as then? What topics are ok to laugh at then? Sorry, but knock-knock jokes aren't my cup of tea. Even the great comedians of this planet will tell you that comedy cannot be censored... It's COMEDY!!
  • It's mostly because sick people write comedy, that it became twisted.

I still think Jon Lajoie is the funniest man out there. Nothing you can say will ever change my mind.
I realize rape isn't a joke; but he isn't saying rape is. The joke is him playing up to the stereotypical rapist/pedophile/serial killer/pencil crayon seller. (You have to admit when the wide selection of pencil crayons comes up it's notlike you can't take it seriously at all.)
I think you should check out "Show me your genitals" and "Show me your gentials 2. E=MC2 vagina" If you take offence to "Public Mastrabator Trenchcoat" for sure you will have a heart attack during those songs...
Women are taking themselves too seriously and can't seem to find the humour in a man mocking rap stars.
I pee my pants every time that I see or hear anything of Jon Lajoie's. And yes, it seems rather morbid to laugh at him in "Cold Blooded Christmas". But it's so outrageous it's hilarious.

I'm sure that you have made off colour comments about gays/lesbians, blondes, pirates, different etnicities...Every joke can be offensive, and if you have a problem with a comedian, don't listen to their set.

So get off your high horse, come down to humanity and learn to laugh.
  • Kinda funny, but would probably offend some ppl!
  • People think it's funny, but it's really taking a serious matter and making light of it.
  • Lajoie
I don't think you people get it. The man is not making fun of RAPE, he's making fun of those 40 year old men who creep on kids on the internet. I believe if he stated in the videos that he thinks rape is not a big deal then that would be totally wrong. He's making fun of our society. That is what most comedians portray. They make jokes about all the things we find too hard to talk about. It's like the elephant in the room. Everyone knows it's there but no one says anything. Everyone is thinking about it. Give the guy a break and stop trying to sound so politically correct, open yourself up, don't be so serious, and stop looking so deep into the context. Not every racial joke has a hidden meaning, and this clip is not making fun of rape. I do value your opinions but I think they were made too quickly.
  • It was really hard for me to watch this video. It doesn't look like a comedy at all Biltema.
  • Yan Yan
    its not serious!

hes not at a podium with blood squirting out of his eyes and veins implodind in his neck preaching and screaming to go beat your wife is he? NO! you all need to get over yourselves! I have seen all of Jan Jolie's movies and I find them funny.
  • YanYan
Where the hell do you get rape from this vid??? I heard non of the sort!
  • I can't say I approve this. I get the humor, but this is not right. It makes it look ok, like that should happen because its just the way world is. I really dont think so. I think people need to be helped and straightened, but if we make joke about them - means we accept their way as something natural.
  • Eh... That's just bad comedy.
  • Meh... i do agree with captainskyhawk on this one though.
  • Oh, but isn't male prison rape just hilarious?!? Everyone seems to find laughter in that! Do you extend the same outrage to that?
  • I agree that this is completely tasteless. I think these people have never been exposed to the reality of sexual crimes. I was locked up with child molesters, rapists and career pedophiles. It's no joke. These are sick people.

    Jonathan Richards
  • That is bull shit video. How could you put that video on the post. I don't find any fun in there.
  • Yeah I didn't like that at all. I agree with you whole-heartedly about using those words as jokes. It just makes me feel uncomfortable. It is a very sad state indeed. Check out the movie Idiocracy for a more accurate picture of how Americans will evolve. Very funny.
  • Jew
    Good pedophile is dead pedophile!
  • Yeah, not funny. Actually disgusting.
  • Yeah, a look at what we find 'funny' these days is a real testament to how far our society has fallen. Sad.
  • That's not a funny word! People who find it as a joke is ridiculous. How can it be sound funny where one's dignity and morality were violated.
  • Wow. You can say that many times over, there is definitely nothing funny about rape. It's vile and disgusting.
  • Joking about rape is tastless and senseless. How can anyone joke about something that is so emotionally damaging and traumatizing to the victim of such an act? Our society has become so compassionless that to entertain, we have turned to the exploitation of a violent crime that robs the victim of their sexual identity and the pleasure they should naturally derive from a normal functioning sex life.
  • There is nothing funny about the word rape, it is s seriously bad word and should not be taken in a 'fun' sense.

I don't know whats wrong with people now a days, recently I have been busy in reporting rape websites, yes websites with actual videos of rape cases, its just sick. >:(

I cannot bring down their websites as it is on a dedicated server, but the places they use to advertise, I report their posts and they remove the advertisement from their website. But they are using an automated script for that and I appear to be losing :(
  • That video was not funny at all.
  • jen
I've actually seen some of his videos. I agree that jokes shouldn't be made about subjects about those topics, but I think there are many subjects that average Americans laugh at all the time that we shouldn't. We're still insensitive enough to laugh at racist and sexist jokes, as well as jokes about midgets and the mentally retarded. None of it is right.

I'd rather bad people like rapist and pedos be the butt of a joke, and to be discriminated against, than someone who can't help their situation.
  • kc*
How can people think that's funny? It's ridiculoud. Comedy is going downhill with fools like these.
