Still Think McCain is a Moderate?
I have written a ton of articles on John McCain and as soon as every single one of these posts have went up, I have had at least one comment or direct email telling me that either I was wrong and that McCain is a moderate or I have been told that they thought he was a moderate. This is because McCain is using the tactic that has been seen to be the most effective and successful in his campaign thus far–He is targeting swing voters and making them believe that indeed, he is the right candidate to vote for since he is what we’re used to–Some woman-hating, old wrinkly white dude.
Every candidate in this election so far has their own niche–Obama says that this country needs change, Hillary spouts bullshit on whatever she thinks Obama is doing wrong while reinforcing the fact that he happens to be black and McCain just wants to give this country more of the same. When you can get through his haphazard mumbling and stating the wrong facts about this so-called War on Terror McCain is using the political agenda that worked so well for Bush–Twice.
But alas, McCain’s mailings are helping those of us who have been trying to inform the voting public that McCain is by no means, not even a little, a moderate candidate.

The flier above is a recent mailing that McCain has recently put out. While most of the public has viewed McCain as a moderate, he is finally coming out and setting people straight; letting everyone know that he is an anti-woman, anti-choice, anti-reproductive rights conservative. It’s about time that he let everyone know where he really stands on this issue, but after seeing and reading so much about McCain, I wonder if he came to this decision on his own or if someone who works for him had to explain his standing to him; or maybe he is just following suit with Bush, it worked so well for him, right?
There are a lot of things wrong with this flier, but of course I would find several things that tick me off about it, were you really expecting anything less from me?
The word pro-life really rubs me the wrong way; in fact, the term pro-life in general does nothing but help out the anti-choice agenda. I mean, who isn’t pro-life? I like life, the people I know like life, life is really a top notch thing; but people who are already alive just tend to hold more weight in my mind than a cluster of cells. By coining the term “pro-life” those who are anti-choice get a veil of defense surrounding them automatically. It does not reveal their true agenda to those who may not be educated about reproductive rights and freedoms to begin with; those people are seeing the word life and thinking “Okay, life is good, therefore this organization must be good, too!” And that is simply just not the case.
I really hate the fact that his wife is in this flier with him. By a the same woman he called cunt being in a flier with him for his anti-choice agenda, he is giving those who don’t know the real McCain the illusion that he is pro-woman, which is completely the opposite of what he is publicizing.
I also think that just maybe, McCain forgot how long he has been in congress, which is 26 years, not 24 as it says on that flier. Like Amanda Marcotte said:
“What was he doing those other two years? Dicking around and paying for abortions that he was the original cause of? Foolishly allowing his second wife to use contraception? Wishing that his first wife had just aborted the pregnancies that led to the children who wouldn’t speak to him after he left her for a richer, younger, more politically viable wife that had been his mistress during the first marriage? It really undermines his claims to be always anti-choice and never wavering about that.
If you still think McCain is a moderate, this flier really sets the record straight; McCain is and has always been a voice for the anti-choice agenda. A voice to speak out about how wrong reproductive rights are. A voice of a misogynist.

Huh. I never knew people claimed McCain was a moderate, but I guess this shouldn’t surprise me. That’s what I get for living in Canada, I guess?
Anyway, good post. I wasn’t aware about the congress thing, either. Makes me very curious…
Well..that’s pretty funny, Holly! While I’m ranting that he is not Conservative and is in fact very Liberal – you’re over here calling him a conservative! LOL. While he may be conservative on this issue and on the war on terror – all of his other positions are actually to the left of moderate even!
Now – on the pro-life issue – we are not anti-choice – we are for protecting the life of the unborn child and therefore the term pro-life. I actually did a very extensive unbiased paper on the whole abortion issue if you are ever interested in reading it. It was probably one of the hardest paper’s I’ve written considering my position on the issue. It weighs both sides and concludes nothing either way. You know the e-mail addy if you want me to send it to ya.
Again – the issue here is the answer to the question – at what point does life begin? For those of us who are pro-life – it is at conception. For those of you who are pro-choice – you obviously believe that life doesn’t start with a heartbeat.
In either case, I hate McCain as well – but for obviously and completely different reasons that you. Neither Obama or Hillary are any better as they would bring this country down even further than what the Dem Congress has done to us now. Since the Dems have had power, our economy has taken a drastic downturn; the price of oil has tripled and the price of gas has doubled; the price of all food products has increased by 20% and the cost of corn and corn products has increased by 25% because of that stupid ethanol idea they pushed through. If Hillary or Obama get in, the Dems in Congress will be free to continue sending our economy in a downward spiral and they would call in for defeat and retreat in Iraq causing all the terrorists to follow us home – there will be another attack on American soil with a Dem in the White House. They have said so themselves. Read Jeffrey Goldberg’s book “Prisoner.” He has lived in an Al Qaeda Madrassa for a month – he has people who he calls “friends” that are terrorist leaders in Palestine. He’s interviewed the Commanding General of Hamas. These guys want to kill us and they have clearly stated it – and have clearly stated that the only reason they fight in Iraq right now is because that is where they have immediate access to kill the Americans. Bring our troops home and they start the war on our soil.

“for 24 years he’s been pro-life”
It’s cute how the time frame excludes his time fighting in Vietnam. War isn’t very pro-life.
And, hey, the term is pro-life, so, what about non-human life? What about the polar bears and the trees? I bet McCain sometimes kills mosquitoes and bacteria. Aren’t they “life” too? Or is he wavering now?
Well, all sarcasm aside, I agree with you, in disliking “pro-life” as a term. There are just far too many ways one can find, taking a basic glance at the conservative platform, in which the term is hypocritical.

Good stuff here – although, I don't see how supporting the life of an unborn baby is anti-reproductive…that is kind of countering yourself isn't it?
Good post though!
I know this is really old, but I just wanted to make a quick comment about Bobo's statement. I'm not arguing with any of it, I really hate arguing about issues like this, but one thing he said really bugged me…
“For those of us who are pro-life – it is at conception. For those of you who are pro-choice – you obviously believe that life doesn't start with a heartbeat.”
But…there is no heartbeat at conception..the heart doesn't begin to form and function until the 2nd month of pregnancy…so…conception (typically immediately after/during sex) has absolutely nothing to do with that point…
Just saying. *shrug*

Why are the hearts of so many bleeding hearts bone dry when it comes to the unborn? I realize that unplanned pregnancies can complicate one's life but does that result in a sudden loss of all compassion to this odd subset of society? Why don't you acknowledge that living being that is in the womb?
Bottom line: Being pro-choice is only moderate if you ARE pro-choice because moderate connotes reasonableness. It skews reality so that destroying a baby developing in the womb somehow is “moderate”. What a joke, as is your column, which is offensive and petty-and anything but moderate. You're an extremist, pure and simple, one who would only appeal to those with the National Organization for Women mindset. You're preaching to the choir. So what's the point?
