5th Annual Race to Stop the Silence

stop the silence

I thought I was too late with this, but luckily, I’m not!

stop the silence race This Sunday, April 13, is the 5th Annual Race to Stop the Silence, presented by the Ms. Foundation for Women and The Washington Post, in an effort to raise awareness and stop the silence surrounding child sexual abuse. It will take place at 8:30am in Anacostia Park in Washington DC.

If you are around the Washington DC area, I cannot urge you enough to go and be part of this amazing activist effort. Child sexual abuse is a silent epidemic and it is only growing more rapidly out of control. If you wish to take part in the 10k race and the 5K pledge walk you can register either today, tomorrow or Sunday before the race at a tent near the skating rink at Anacostia Park, which will open at 6:30am. Download the registration form here and bring it to the balcony of the Old Post Office Pavilion at 1100 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. Also, you can download the agenda of activities here. (PDF)

This is definitely a great cause; for those of you who are already signed up and ready to go, good luck; and for the rest of you, go download the registration form!

This is What a Feminist Looks Like

This video was put out by the Feminist Majority Foundation and has been out for a little while now, but it is truly a timeless video debunking those stereotypical feminist myths and using celebrities and familiar faces such as America Ferrera, Larry David, Michael Moore and Lisa Loeb to tell people what feminism is, who feminists are and what feminists stand for.

Blog Against Sexual Violence

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Sexual assault awareness is very close to my heart, as a survivor myself and April is a very important month to me, especially this year since abyss2hope is creating even more outlets for awareness by hosting the second annual Blog Against Sexual Violence.

On April 3rd, bloggers from across the blogosphere will have the opportunity to speak out about sexual violence and how important it is to end the pandemic that exists across the world and within every culture.

I cannot urge bloggers enough to get involved with this and I hope to see a lot of positive posts on ending sexual violence this month.

Finding Angela Shelton

filed under books, sexual assault

Angela Shelton I’ve written about Angela Shelton before , specifically about her activism efforts regarding the Report It campaign as well as the Report It rallies for victim’s rights, but there is some awesome news that I couldn’t let go by without mentioning and that is that Angela Shelton is now also a novelist, on top of being the superhero of victim rights activism.

Angela Shelton was sexually abused as a young child by her father, which is what she confessed to the world while making her documentary, Searching for Angela Shelton. Since then, she has become a motivating and inspiring woman to countless survivors. On a personal level, after watching her documentary and after some time reading up on her and getting involved myself with activism efforts to raise awareness about sexual abuse, she had given me the motivation to speak up about my own abuse in early 2007.

She has undoubtedly inspired the lives of many people to either confront their own abuse or get involved in raising awareness of just how widespread sexual abuse is. In fact, it is believed that each and every single person knows someone who has been sexually abused, yet the silence surrounding it is overwhelming.

On top of her activism efforts, Angela Shelton’s first book, an autobiography of her life and her abuse, as well as overcoming it and going on to help others, Finding Angela Shelton, is hitting bookstores April 1! You can pre-order the book today or head on down to your local bookstore and pick it up when it’s released!

Blog for Choice 2008

Blog for Choice Day January 22 marks the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

On January 22, NARAL Pro-Choice America is holding the third annual Blog for Choice Day! In years past, this has had amazing success and this year, they are asking bloggers why they vote pro-choice.

This is a tremendously important day, especially for bloggers–Every day is a fight for women’s rights as the administration we are under is constantly trying to take a woman’s right to choose away. That, teamed up with anti-choice extremists, makes access to safe health care a never-ending battle. So please join NARAL Pro-Choice America and other pro-choice bloggers this year on January 22.

You can sign up here and even download a Blog for Choice graphic here to let everyone know that you are participating. Also, on January 22, your blog post will appear on the Blog for Choice page. Good deal.

As the anniversary approaches, NARAL Pro-Choice America also came out with RoeAt35.org, a website that is increasing the awareness of particularly the state of Wyoming and Bush’s latest effort to completely destroy access to health care for women.

President Bush has nominated Richard Honaker for a lifetime job as a federal judge. Honaker, a sworn enemy of women’s rights has spent his entire career fighting to deny women access to reproductive-health services and has publicly and actively opposes abortion and has tried three times to outright ban abortion in Wyoming.

So, in your activism efforts, stop by RoeAt35.org and fill out the form to be sent to the Senate and let them know that you do not support Richard Honaker for a position as a lifetime federal judge.
