Utah & South Carolina Attempt Strict Bans and Regulations on Abortion
Conservative Utah state legislators are preparing to propose legislation that would ban abortion in the state. This legislation was originally announced in October 2008 and was supposed to turn up during the 2009 legislative session, but state legislators decided to wait due to the cost involved in legally defending the ban. This ban came along with other provisions and a series of bills intended to ban abortion except in cases of rape, incest and endangerment of maternal health.
Three Republican state representatives plan to introduce a bill to create a legal defense fun to cover the costs of defending a ban on abortion in the future. This legal defense fund will act solely to receive donations from state citizens to fund a state-wide ban.
Utah State Representative Carl Wimmer said:
“We are looking at wanting to ban abortion in Utah, period, end of story. However, we want to do it correctly…we’re not going to back away from abortion. We’re never going to let it die.”
Well isn’t that assuring!? They are looking to ban abortion. Period. End of sentence. Not ban abortion except in cases of rape and incest, just ban abortion. No exceptions. Because every child deserves to grow up in the foster care system or be killed by it’s parent(s) or go through life homeless and starving because that woman couldn’t take care of herself to begin with but because she lives in Utah, she has to learn real fast what it’s like being homeless, on the streets, with child. Even in cases of rape and incest, don’t you dare think for a second that the state will have any compassion on the fact that you have been through a tragedy, now you’ve just been through a tragedy and need to either mother that child (and see your abuser’s face every time you look at that child) or put it in foster care where it will live throughout the system and at 18, be forced out on the street with no education and no clue about how to live life in the real world. Yes, every fetus is loved (by Republican State Representatives) but as soon as that child exits the wombs, no one wants to know how that child is doing. Utah apparently has it all figured out.
And coming in as a close second is South Carolina.
Seven South Carolina state representatives presented a bill in December that aims to tighten regulations on abortion because apparently women are not yet jumping through enough hoops for South Carolina yet when seeking an abortion.
The existing South Carolina law requires that women must have an ultrasound and wait one hour after discussing details of the abortion procedure prior to actually having an abortion. This is already a blatant attempt at trying to guilt a woman out of having an abortion performed, but the current bill would extend the waiting period from one hour to 24 hours and would also require that all doctors inform women of the option to view an ultrasound prior to the abortion procedure as well as provide women with a list of places that offer free ultrasounds. The law originally planned that a viewing of an ultrasound would be mandatory.
This is very A Clockwork Orange-esque to me. I can imagine states passing laws that would require women to sit in a room all day with their eyes peeled open and having to look at a fetus that they do not want. I then picture anti-choice protesters and doctors picketing around this woman screaming things like ‘Look at it! Now go home and think about what you’re doing!’ Because of course we all know how women are just moody to begin with and don’t actually know what they want in life which is why male state representatives must choose for them, right? All of these abortion bans are absolute bullshit. If a woman is seeking an abortion, chances are she has thought about her options and what she wants to do. Isn’t it about time we started treating women as human beings able to make their own decisions, especially when those decisions have to do with their own well being and their own bodies? I think so.
Work on that state legislatures, okay?
The current cost to try to overturn Roe v. Wade would range between $4 million and $7 million. Instead of using millions of dollars to take away the rights of women in this country, why not put that money towards legitimate sex education for adolescents and other educational programs to ensure that all states are doing as much as they can to prevent wanted pregnancies? In order to cut down on the amount of abortions performed each year, it is important to make sure that women know everything that can about preventing pregnancy in the first place. If you really care about life, why not do whatever you can to ensure that people are living safe, full lives?
