The Vatican Says Your Pee is Polluting the Environment

birth control The Vatican newspaper misinterpreted the facts of a recent study about pharmaceuticals ending up in the US water supply.

According to the Vatican, oral contraceptives are the sole culprit for polluting the environment, but that’s not all; the Vatican is also claiming that birth control pills are making men infertile.

The pill “has for some years had devastating effects on the environment by releasing tonnes of hormones into nature” through female urine, said Pedro Jose Maria Simon Castellvi, president of the International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations, in the report.

“We have sufficient evidence to state that a non-negligible cause of male infertility in the West is the environmental pollution caused by the pill,” he said, without elaborating further.

First of all, the Vatican believes in science (you know, that thing that gives us medicine) only when it is convenient for them so the International Federation of “Catholic Medical” Associations is already a less-than-credible resource as far as I’m concerned.

The Vatican has continuously spoken out about their disapproval of women’s rights and Pope Benedict XVI followed suit in October, reaffirming the Roman Catholic Church’s condemnation of contraception. While it is true that there are many pharmaceuticals that are finding their way into our water supply, to pick and choose what parts of scientific research you want to believe and even publish an entire story in a newspaper about, just to support your agenda is ridiculous. Then again, hey, that’s religion for you–It’s all about picking and choosing and leaving the rest.

So women, the moment you urinate while taking oral contraceptives, the Vatican is holding you responsible for polluting the environment as well as making men all around the United States infertile. This is yet another case of the sexuality and now even bodily functions of women are considered inappropriate or unnatural in some way. Who knew just being a woman could threaten and offend so many people so much. Do we feel ashamed yet?

    Instead of focusing on and criticizing the Vatican, look at the facts and take a balanced perspective. The US Department of Wildlife and Fisheries have found trans-gender fish. The Potomac river in Washington DC has male rockfish with both sexes' organs. A University of Denver scientist found trans-gender fish in Colorado rivers. Orange County in California proved there are birth-control pill chemicals in the water. It is also a problem in India.

    What is scary is what is it doing to innocent people, especially children, and innocent animals? This is a serious crisis. It is not about being a woman, it is about pharmaceutical companies cheaply and irresponsibly trying to profit from medical needs and women's desire to control their bodies.
    Women need to boycott and rally pharmaceutical companies to make a form of the drug that either is disposed in the trash or all drug companies have to pay for new ways to filter and catch the estrogen (make it bind with a harmless chemical at the sewage plant).

    I especially can't stand the environmentalists who look the other way with this issue. Well go look the other way! Your children will be hermaphrodites, have fun!

  • The Vatican will say anything to get people to stop using birth control. I was absolutely disgusted when I found out that they had traveled to 3rd world countries to tell them that condoms do not help to prevent the spread of AIDS in order to discourage them from using that form of birth control. It's atrocious.

  • Another example of the RC church's attempt to disavow science (while using pseudo-science to disavow science--hypocrites). You'd think an institution that had a Virgin giving birth to their God-made-human would have a bit more respect for women. Nope.
  • This is just terrible. Terrible, terrible. One wonders what thinking went behind a statement like this, and what they hoped to accomplish. Perhaps there's a combination here of group think, deference to superiors, and especially the fact that there probably aren't any women of significant authority at the top of this organization.
