Wanda Sykes is Out and Proud

Sorted under GLBTQ on November 25, 2008

I’m a little late with this, but as the saying goes, it’s better late than never. So, for those of you who didn’t already know or for those of you who just cannot get enough of this wonderful speech Sykes gave, here you go.

* warning for the YouTube comments, as per usual, they consist of almost nothing but bible-thumping bullshit.

Wanda Sykes is officially out of the closet–publicly.

The article that was written in Black Voices about this is a little…demeaning if you ask me. First of all, the title sounds more like a punch in the gut–Wanda Sykes: Declaring Herself Gay, After Feeling ‘Attacked’ By Proposition 8

Declaring herself gay? Like that’s all there is to it? Someone just wakes up one morning, declares themselves gay and goes to Starbucks for a latte? No, I don’t think so. The article itself is pretty straight-forward, but then we’re hit with another ‘WTF’ moment when we get to the bottom of the article and we see a poll with the heading What do you think of Wanda Sykes’ revelation that she is gay?

Wanda Sykes’ revelation, huh? Maybe, just maybe, if this writer listening to Sykes’ speech, they would know that this wasn’t a “revelation,” but I just had a revelation of the writer of this article being an asshole, throwing subtle gut punches into an article for perhaps their own, personal amusement. I was waiting for a line like ‘Wanda Sykes has made the choice to become gay,’ but I guess these two examples of a writer writing an article they should have definitely steered clear of is just as good.

My family was talking about this the other day and asked me if she was Gay . . . I replied "You don't have to be gay to speak in support of the LGBT community."

LOL! I hadn't seen it, and didn't realize it was her coming out party.

I think it's important to have a group of high-profile unapologetic people of any minority. It may be the one time that the celebs really can help others by using their voices!
  • it's nice to enjoy deliverance once in a while!
  • That was total BS. I hate when people act so snobby towards LGBT like their so much better because their hetero or something. SMH you can help who you love . Period. Even though I am hetero it's none of my business what people do behind closed doors I always wondered why people took such offence to this like-WHAT'S IT TO YOU??? SMH. rediculous. Ilove Wanda she's so freakin' halarious. does that mean I cant laugh at her jokes b/c she's gay? O_o yeah people are so stupid. When I found out Queen Latifah was Bisexul ( Lesbian...see I dont even know which one it is; shows how much I care right?) I was like "And? So what?" She's still a beautiful, inspiring and talented women. That's what matters to me. She is still my role model in every way :)
  • Good to see Wanda Sykes speaking out and standing up... You can't help what you think, feel and desire. :-)
  • Great post! And I'm really happy for Wanda. I'll be even happier when she's not a second-class citizen under the law.

Wow that is great.I like your writing. Thanks for sharing the info.
  • i like it.
  • Wanda Sykes rawks. She always has. I am so sick and tired of people who are so bunged up by the gay thing. I think the bible-thumpers just bitch because none of them have had a decent orgasm since...well, since ever. If they had a few, they might not be so freakin' crabby.

    Just sayin'.
  • Yay, this makes me so happy! Even though I've come across it on the internets before, it makes me happy every time I see it! Good for her for speaking out, speaking up! Seriously, I love this! I know this probably sounds silly, but I just feel so proud of her. She felt a moral calling to be more public, and she went for it, and she did so gracefully! I love at the end when she says "Now let's go get our damn equal rights, c'mon!" Or something to that effect. It's just casual, jokey, but forceful and serious at the same time. Confident that the battle will be won, but solemn in that one must be fought... I love this.
