The World is Now Dominated by Women, Where Have I Been?

someecards

After hundreds of thousands of years of men ruling the world and everything in it, especially women and government, men are now saying that they feel emasculated. Boohoo.

Via Broadsheet, I read about a study done by the Telegraph surveying the feelings of modern men living in the 21st century. About 2,000 men and women were polled for this study online and the outcome is quite shocking, in a “You got to be kidding me” kind of way.

“Many men believe the world is now dominated by women and that they have lost their role in society, fueling feelings of depression and being undervalued.”

Wow, you know, this sounds eerily familiar. Say, aren’t men guilty of dominating the world and making women feel as if not only they don’t have a role in society, but they shouldn’t have a role in society? In fact, aren’t men continuing to make women feel this way today? Why yes, I believe they are! I would love to be informed as to where all of these women are dominating the world because I am sure as hell failing to see this.

This “study” also has the nerve to include:

“Asked what it meant to be a man in the 21st century, more than half thought society was turning them into “waxed and coiffed metrosexuals”

So what men are trying to say is that they feel it is unfair for them to be judged based on their physical appearance? Wow, that also sounds like more of the same. It is common sense that no one likes to be told or believe that they must live up to a stereotypical norm when it comes to appearance, but come on now, get serious. Men feel as if they are being forced into looking like something they’re not? Take a look at every Maxim, Stuff, Playboy, Penthouse and Hustler magazine; in fact, take a look at any magazine or turn your television on to any channel or watch any movie–And then look at the statistics for eating disorders and tell me that they don’t have the least bit to do with each other. Women have been conditioned to hate their bodies, which is the product of the media telling women what men want.

And lastly…

“Men said they “felt handcuffed” by political correctness – only 33 percent felt they could speak freely and say what they thought, whereas two thirds found it safer and to conceal their opinions.”

I know many women who find it safer to conceal their opinions, since women have also been conditioned to be seen and not heard and to be the pretty face next to the strong and powerful husband, which can clearly be seen in any story where a male politician or sports star is discovered in a sex scandal; of course, the woman is always standing by her man with her mouth shut, smiling politely like she is told to. A woman who chooses to speak her mind freely and openly is mostly ridiculed for her blunt honesty by the majority of people who care not to listen based purely on her possession of a vagina.

It seems as if once women set their footprints in the wet concrete of history and start making own choices without having to consult a man before doing so, the men start to get all uppity. You would think that with men feeling the way they apparently do, they would begin to see what women have gone through to get where they stand today and that they would understand and appreciate the activism and determination in which we have fought for our rights and have a better understanding of equal rights. However, men believe that they are deserving of all power in all aspects of life and in society based purely on their possession of a penis.

While you feel completely emasculated, confused and rejected from society, welcome to the lives of women.

Well, I’m glad feminism amounts to nothing more than revenge. I thought it meant equality, across class and age and gender and racial bounds. “Poor, powerless men, (cackle).”

Keep in mind, if these men feel powerless, it’s probably not because women actually rule them – it’s the wealthy that do – it just means that they’re going to be building resentment against women who do oppress them in the name of the actual oppressors. Congrats on seeing the quisling POV. IRL, As a man, a straight man, who has a degree in feminism/queer studies, you’ve really missed the forest for the trees. Hope you’re happy. It’s not about women being “more powerful”, or making men “feel weak”; it’s about eliminating the feeling of weakness in everybody, and therefore the urge to re-institute the master/slave relationship in alternate forms.

The problem is, M, that men aren’t powerless. Their claims of “feeling powerless” amounts to only ruling 95% of the world instead of 99%. Excuse me for not being sympathetic. The claims of this study? Ridiculous.

As far as missing the point, you’ve shot past the entire point of this post and then managed to slingshot around just to miss it again. The point was that men, despite the claims of one study, are not powerless or weakened as claimed. If they really were they might have an ounce of sympathy for what women have gone through the last couple thousand years.

Their argument amounts to the same my 4 year old makes when he takes a toy from his brother and I make him give it back. Expecting sympathy for a perceived loss without sympathy for the loss of others, all while ignoring the pile of toys he has exclusively that he doesn’t share with his little brother. If I don’t feel sad that he’s not allowed to bully others then I’m not going to feel sad that adults aren’t allowed to do so either.

Excuse me! Most men are not CEO’s. Most men are NOT presidents or rich. There are many more homeless men than there are rich men. So quit with this, ALL men are unfairly privileged and, “dominant” CRAP!! Men built all the cities in which women have achieved this “progress” that you talk about! And now women on average, live SEVEN years longer than men….or MORE!!!….Due to medical discoveries made by MEN! Men are subservient to women as boys, to their mothers, in grade school, now in work…Yet you only wan’t to talk about MEN dominating everything, and women being subservient! Excuse ME for not being sympathetic for thousands of years of chivalry, and men killing each other in war, and inventing, and building things, so that middle-class suburban women could ride down the street in a car built by a man! Not to mention she is making more money than many men are….So give up your houses, cars, bathrooms, sinks, medicine…everything built by a man, or SHUT UP ABOUT calling ALL MEN OPPRESSORS or dominant! If you don’t have an “ounce of sympathy” for what many men went through in the last thousands of years, No, I won’t sympathy for the women’s side of it! By the way, Women are the majority of child abusers… BY the way , there is NO LAW, in the U.S., saying that women have to marry a “powerful” MAN! Many wives CHOOSE to marry a rich man, to get half of his money! Yes, women DOMINATE families, kids, so YES they dominate the world!!! Families are Matriarchies….Male politicians actually discriminate against MEN, low-income and homeless men, in their laws, to attract women voters, so why can’t you see THAT!!! There are MILLIONS fewer men in America than women, because of war, and risky jobs partly, so put that in your oppression bin! You are a Fascist feminist stereotyper! Go join the Third Reich!

Unfortunately the world still goes around, and like you said, women are still being treated poorly in the work field. My one girlfriend is in a manager position at her work, and they’re all only male working there, and she’s getting sexual harassed but she cannot complain or else they would run her out of the store.
Why can’t men see that we’re not taking their roles away from them, but simply SHARING with them?
Men just cannot accept competition… lol

This post reminds me of a class I took in college. I remember discussing the idea of what it means to really progress in the field of women’s rights. One of the books we read asked some valid questions, so now I pose them, in all sincerity,to all readers and authors of this blog: Does it validate us as women to merely reach for the goal of doing the same things men have done? Why is this the standard to reach for? Can’t we truly prove our worth by reaching for-and creating-something BETTER? I see no victory in making men feel the same oppression-isn’t there a better way? And shouldn’t we, as PEOPLE of the 21st century, be able to find it?

While many men may trot out the overused and old “PC culture is overly restrictive and I can’t say anything blah blah”, I’ve never really seen it stop them either. Not only does it not stop them, but I know that in academic settings, many women are subtly encouraged to remain silent when men frame their own opinions with “I know this may not be popular, so don’t shoot me or anything, but….” I call it the ‘reasonable guy” defense.

I never allow that type of framing in my classes as any dissent after that is introduced translates to “if you disagree, you are humorless, too radical, and don’t understand my simple point I need to make, so much so that I need to be afraid”. Not exactly a great way to encourage discourse.

They are still trying to make women feel guilty about working and having a life. No they say, we should still be sitting at home waiting for them hand and foot. They can’t fool us with this show of feeling threatened. Get back in the dark ages boys we are the future and you had better believe it.

What was that Walt Disney movie about the Lion King. The circle of life. Welcome to our world men, now how do you like it. Being 60+ I can remember when women did not work away from the home, they stayed home and took care of everything. The few women who did, it was expected of them to still take care of everything and work outside of the home, as my mother did. With 6 kids it was very hard on her. My husband was raised with the same mentality as my father. I resented having to work outside the home and do everything, so when I raised my children they were all raised gender did not matter, they all worked in the home, men and women could do whatever they wanted to do, marriage was 50/50. Raising kids was 50/50. My son does the cooking, takes the kids to the Dr more than his wife. I think a lot of women changed the way their daughters and sons were raised when it was required that they work outside of the home.

I think it would be different if the women one repeatedly met in positions of power were capable and intelligent rather than simpering affirmative action hires. The world needs more Hilary Clintons (who I must point out did not get “The Job”) and fewer of those women who got their online degrees and have suddenly moved up from the secretarial pool into administrative positions.

So are we supposed to not fulfill our petential and chase our dreams just because some men can't cope and feel emasculated? I don't think so! Women are stronger than men anyway, much stronger emotionally and much more able to cope with demands on us. Som emen can cope with their changing role and lots can't. Know what? – That's their problem not ours.

Did it ever occur to you that to treat women as equals was a learning process for most men, and that women never went through that learning process?

From the age of 4 I was told to watch out for girl, don't hurt them, don't botter them, don't harass them (that came later), don't don't don't. I've learned to be respectful of women.

As women gain more power in our common society, they too will need to learn to use it respectfully.

Well I won't lie this is the first post on your site I have read so I won't jump into a discussion on a topic I haven't seen or heard both sides from, which is something I would like to hear. As for the post it is really well written but I'm sure you know that already and I am super jealous of your writing style. As you can see mine isn't that great.

I do understand partly what the men surveyed are saying, but I think it all depends on the way the questions asked were phrased (as with any survey). I think there may have been a few leading questions snuck into the survey that lead to a, shockingly, large number of men saying they feel emasculated.

Again I will point out I know very little about what its like for women today, but I think that a lot of the male feelings of emasculation are rooted in mass media, I know everyone blames it these days but you think of the images both men and women are supposed to aspire too are just unrealistic. What man can be a mix of Dirty Harry and Dirty Dancing all the time and I'm sure its the same for women as well. Unrealistic and unobtainable expectations that we all are meant to be.

As for the PC issue I think thats a load of BS, I have and always will say what I think. If a mans out of line I will say so and its exactly the same for a woman, I will also compliment and congratulate both men and women on any success they have.

On the PC note, Ladies if a guy said he was proud to be a man would you think he was being chauvinistic? because that is the number one thing I have heard from my male friends that women are hypocritical on the matter of gender pride. I have always assumed it was crap but wanted to get your opinion(s).

My take on the matter is that Men and women are equal entities in society and anyone who says otherwise or claims that one gender is superior to the other is talking out of their arse.

I think there's a pressure on both sides. Men are brought up to be stoic and never show emotion, let alone cry, if they show any sign of emotion or protest they're told to 'man-up' the media pushes them to be a certain way just like we do, except for them they're supposed to be these muscular, manly cassanovas.

However, it is still worse for women, everything female is an insult, I'm not sure if men reaslise that half the owrds they use to insult each other is anti-female, being female is somehow something to be ashamed of in a way. We're conditioned to hate our own bodies, we're told to strive to be a shape we are not because that's what the media tells us all men want, I'm sure this happens with men too. We're still getting paid up to 25% less than out male counterparts despite working the exact same job, we have to not only play house and bring up the kids, but we've also got to have a career, it's a lot on our plates. There's a lot more I'd like to say, but I'm scared I'll run out of room, suffice to say that we need equality and we're still nowhere near acheiving it.

  40. Bobolino59 says:

actualy the 25% figure comes from lifetime income and a large (over 60%) part of it is due to women getting pregnant and having kids and then staying home at least a few years.

In most corporations and factories nowadays pay is very unflexible and does not hinge on sex. Only small companies still discriminate because they are not a target for lawsuits as there is not enough dough in them to make it worth the lawfirm's time.

Now I happen to be one of the few people and economists who thinks women should be compensated by the state for the important work of raising the next generation. That would smooth over the difference nicely.
